Title: Who is Your Character Based Off of? [Revived]
Post by: Ogre Time Yay on Dec 27, 2013, 09:09 AM
Someone made this topic before... I can't remember who, when or where it was created, but it's revived, yeah...

The way this works is you post up a video of an actor/character/person from somewhere that is either similar to your character or who you based your character off of. Seen portraits threads, seen casting call threads, but this is more to determine the personality of each character... Give players a better feel of the tone your character will hold during conversations. I also do this somewhat for myself, because often when I associate with characters in game and do not actually know their tone or voice, I chalk them up to having the voice of one of those Imperial Guards from The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.
Blah to that, blah

Okay so... Go ahead, have at it!

An example or uh... Or something:
Character: Fiddles McFiddle
Similar to: Widdles MahPiddles
Video of Similar Character:
Explanation Here: Lemme 'splain you a few things here, detailed or brief.

While Hydaro in combat and in situations of conflict, he does resemble a skill set of that of the character Rocket Raccoon, HOWEVER!
For this, I think I'm gonna go back a bit, originally I created Hydaro to be more like the character Max Payne (At the time he was created, his personality resembled that of Max from Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max. Now he's more like Max Payne 3, a drunk has been with very few talents other than killing), when it comes to Forgotten Realms stories, Hydaro is as Story Noir as they get. I even have points where Hydaro narrates things through emote from time to time.

As it stands, Hydaro has the same grouchy personality and smart ass tone as Max from Max Payne 3 currently, and the constant drunkenness to back that up. Give Max Payne an English accent and you got Hydaro's voice... And personality.

Max Payne 3 Opening Scene, Max's conscience speaking to him and attempting to get him to let go of the past. Similar to the conflicted nature of Hydaro, now driven mentally insane.

Annnnd some Max Payne quotes that perfectly match Hydaro's mood and personality... There are a few spoilers in this video, so if you intended to play any of the Max Payne games and don't want the story ruined for you, avoid this next video. If not, enjoy.

This is an interesting question you pose, Hyde. Morwen was invented right out of my head as my DnD character in the winter of 1980/81 when, snowbound, a group of us discovered the game. The name was pinched straight from Silmarillion which I was reading at the time.  The personality developed organically and really represents myself acting through these various imaginary settings. That said, she has taken on some of these influences:
Miss Murray from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and a really great real life character named Julie d'Aubigny.

Mala was always intended to channel Aleister Crowley.

Quick off the top of my head: Jonan Kelten is pretty much Tony Stark/Robert Downy Jr.  Always intended him to be the genius-level intellect that builds really, really bad-ass things that can destroy other things.  No drinking problems though. :P

Veir's personality (and to some extent his background) is very much based upon Sir William Marshall (1147-1219), an English knight who is famous for his devotion to his land and the institution of England rather than to any one king.

Khorigesh is originally based upon my first ever D&D PC, a dragonborn (in 4e I'm ashamed to admit) paladin, interestingly of Moradin, as he had been fostered by a dwarven cleric of Moradin per the DM's request.

Merri Riordan is a pastiche of various trickster characters, the most prominent of which are Jim Carey's Mask, and Puck from A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Aelie continues the tradition of my first character on any given server being based on my very first roleplaying character, an Ultima Online tamer/mage named Sara.  Sara was something of a loose cannon in a Lawful Good player-run kingdom, too unpredictable to earn a high position but too valuable to kick out despite doing such things as calling the high priest an idiot, crashing combat training sessions with a dragon to see how they fare against people who 'don't play by the rules' (and indeed the community did have 'rules' for PvP conduct, which I ignored), and slapping the Queen after a knighting ceremony for insulting her.  All the time around such a colorful cast of characters (You think we have ECL problems here, we had a character there who claimed partial descent from at least nine races) eventually rendered her a bit mental, which only added to the chaos she caused.  Aelie probably resembles Sara the strongest of any of these characters, complete with the dragon, the fact her allies are a lot more dangerous than she is, and even her place and role in the setting.  Sara spent a lot of time sitting around idle, too, and people who didn't interact with her much never appreciated exactly what she did or what she was capable of doing if she made any effort.

As I said, this is something of a tradition for me.  You can reliably bet money that my first character on any given server is going to be a Chaotic Neutral female sorcerer and either a human or an elf depending on my mood at the time (though Sara was human).  It's a general character type I find can adapt to just about any setting and blend in or stand out as much as I feel is appropriate without breaking the character or the setting.

My inspiration for Jay of the Dark Hand was Violent J from ICP. Being as Jaylithel grew out of the original Jay, that would make him the original base for him as well, though he certainly morphed in a very different direction.

Jaylithel is now more akin to the character Cogliosto played by Nicol Williamson in the Spawn movie mixed with a little Prince Kheldar aka Silk from Eddings Belgariad and Mallorian series of books. Jaylithel actually operated in the underbelly of Arabel under that name and a reputation would still be known as he did complete a number of tasks under that guise including "making an example" of an envoy from the Dalelands.

Cecilia Tentazione aka Badhbh was influenced by two sources as well. The first being Meji the "Scary Little Devil Girl" from the web comic Errant Story by Michael Poe. (Not actually of fiendish blood but rather a halfelf). The second is the Morrigan Badb as depicted in Christopher Moore's " A Dirty Job  ".

Dominique Bloodreaver ... she's a mix of country girl + Sonja from the Conan movies with a little 'Nique from the web comic Sinfest.

Geno ... he was inspired by a picture of a dwarf raising a mug with the caption " Spent My Reward on Ale and Whores " I first saw reading PvP Online.

Priya Holyn:

Priyanka Chopra. It's the same dulcet tone, eyes that glance away, same features, but add a slightly... French? accent on top of that. Priya rolls her Rs.

Priya is quiet, demure, not usually meeting people's eyes, but get to know her and she can be a very playful person!

Priya is very graceful and moves with purpose, yet delicate steps. She dances with great skill.

This video shows the facial expressions, as well as the dancing, both graceful and playful:

Cara started as a combination of Drusilla and Faith from Buffy.  After seeing Firefly and Serenity, she has more than a little River Tam to her personality as well.  (Edge has since informed me that this is the "Joss Whedon Special.")  She fights like River and acts like Drusilla (in her less coherent moments).

Yedir Crowblade is heavily based off of a Call of Duty character, (Yes, I'm aware of how unpopular the series has grown among crowds I tend to hang around) this specific character I always thought was very in-depth, his personality and spirit deserved alot more than the short portion of story that the game he came from offered him. So I made Yedir Crowblade in hopes of carrying on the dark nature and appearance of Viktor Reznov, minus the shortness that comes with being a Dwarf. Yedir Crowblade, the proud Dwarven bard and war vet, disowned by his original clan before he was even born, along with his father and grand father, and his father. They take on the name 'Crowblade', and pass down a less traditional style of combat among Dwarves, and a light body of crow like armor in their family. Yedir, after a battle gone very bad against orcs on the outskirts of Skullcrag, had become the last surviving member of the Crowblade name.

Rene Tounier, or by his real name Ryota Takeda, is my detective character who came from Kara Tur at a young age and successfully assimilated into Faerun human culture. He is smart, perceptive, clever, and the character he is -loosely- based off of is Sherlock Holmes. He's my character that is able to fight here and there when he needs to, but prefers to defeat his enemy by outsmarting them. A detective through and through.

Just remembered another character of mine that has a distinct sort of voice and attitude on my head.  Vilith is my sort of standard rubber-stamped elf rogue that I start on new servers.  A touch jaded, a little bitter.  When I was asked who she most resembled, I picked Michelle Rodriguez.  Not only does she have the sort of appearance I imagine, but the overall attitude is right.

Sophia originally had brown hair, and was the star in an old story I began writing but never finished.  At the time, no one character defined her per say, but Dr Who was the original inspiration for that story and she developed out of that.  But, most of her, is unique and original due to the fact that no single character was made from it.   The actual inspiration was the Orbital Theme song for Dr Who.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=-H_o6ncUz3g  This works fairly well.  I translate music into characters, the process is slightly more complex of course.

As for Neisha, that one's a mystery, as you might imagine.  Originally, I thought an elf with a bone arm sounded weird, and I love weird so, no specific character again.  More Swans:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKyqBbLGmJg  By far their best album.

Soril Nesatu was an old UO character of mine that was a half demon.  Except he had permanent red skin, horns, a tail, wings, yadda yadda.  Anyway, I thought about "The Undertaker" from WWF.  That defines him fairly well, or "Kain" again WWF.
I
Sorn Duskryn is even older than Soril, but his creation wasn't based off a pre existing person/thing.  It was more, "I need a drow" and my friend was like "Here's one, he killed his brother" and that started everything.  Chaos and murder ensued.  But, I always thought of Sorn being like Joneleth Irenicus from Balder's Gate 2.  He's just that kind of bad assed mage without limits.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6LbhhoOSIw  This is Sorn at his best.

Well. I stole the name Kallyr from a character in King of Dragon Pass who had the same name. In the game, she was essentially a Saxon Superman. Since her conception, MY Kallyr has very likely become a lot more of a bitch than her original.

I thought Array was a Black Ops(not 2) map? Man, the camp on that stage was unreal by good teams in C3. But it was fun in FFA because of the strip at D3-D4. People would just run there mindlessly.

I utterly adored Almost Famous.  :)

Sheighley Flynn was loosely modeled on the star of "Ella Enchanted" - a very cute movie.  There's the part where Ella (Anne Hathaway) channels Freddie Mercury - and that was the start of Sheighley.

Felix is based off me, to various extents. He's stubborn and idealistic, but will defend those he cares about to the death and to an annoying extent. I wrote a bunch of stories about him in high school.

Nikolai is based off of my old Dragon Age: Origins character, who was based off my friend's D&D character. Russian Barbarian was about as much that translates from the original concept, though. Nikolai Day is still original, I promise.

I'm not quite sure exactly what Merriwether is based off of. I feel like he's just this really enthusiastic newsie. He's sort of part Tin-Tin, part Young Indiana Jones, which I realized after creation. I really enjoy his concept.

So, I did not know anything of the Black Widow until the Avengers chain, but...her style is oddly very similar to the Ravenshadow PCs I play, to some extent or another.  In another server, one of them even ends up falling to the dark side for a while.

Otherwise, I think before I found out that similarity, Alyssana was inspired by some good ol' Asian exorcist/assassin storylines. Soul Calibur, My Date With A Vampire,  etc.  Then she turned out becoming similar to Nolan's version of the Dark Knight.  Go figure.

Sincerely,
Arya

Hal 'Tzer Juei'walin
The EX-Bladesinger, Now Mentally Insane and Evil Beyond Redemption.

The character he is almost -exactly- like is the character Trager from Outlast. He's got the voice, he's got the laid back and somewhat welcoming personality, he's got the burn scarred skin... Trager pretty much -is- Hal 'Tzer if Hal 'Tzer was a human and had a large bald spot.

Trager is an even better example of Hal 'Tzer because of the setting of Outlast, seeing as the mental asylum in that game treats their patients almost like the Blood Cloaks treat their kidnapped slaves.

Alexia Vilkova is not entirely based off anyone, but parts of her story are inspired by, believe it or not,  Hellboy.

Obviously there are some biiiig differences; sex, species, and overall personality for example.  :P  But we choose our own destiny, and to hell with everyone who tries to tell us what we're "supposed" to do and be!

I can tell you the one I'm making up this week, the entire process in facts! So it started with months of Stormy debating new character concepts, to getting the urge to making one myself. To Stormy sending me some really awesome piccys, that gave a few concepts. To almost going for a different one but I was having far too much trouble trying to work out how to play it. To picking the Arcane Trickster idea...

Then the last twist I was trying to work out the personality when I decided you know, I always liked the Cat Woman/Selina who can pass in Bruces social Circuit (that is not Year One Catwoman who... yeah lets pretend that never happened) So the next char is based on a Picture and Catwoman... as the basic inspiration.

Hnmm  Most of my pcs are based off of aspects of me.

Kyle is the part of me that wants to be a better person. To be a hero. The tragic backstory for him emerged on another server that i played on for years before i came here.

Alice is just my humour really given a personality i do most of her decison making through a magic eight ball (you can all thank Aelie for that) She evolved from a pc i created from playing in pathfinder. I don't remember the module but at the start i remember i had made Alice in my head and well... the first villian wore red and black leathers and carried two handaxes... i just looked down at Alice and she was "Well shit" it was quite funny.

Cecilia Rayne is my side that wants to be a bitch :) hmm she evolved from a Server where i was a DM on greyhawk lords and i was running some stuff for Morwen. She evolved from a minor pc in one of the cities who got caught up in a scheme beyond her control. The Collar Ce wears is a magical item that was used to Enslave the Minatour Lord Kazz'zik one of his old bands round his wrists i just liked the idea so kept the collar here though just for the look mostly. When he awokened he hired one of Mors pcs's to retrive it and she brought back the woman who would become Cecilia and she was then enslaved and twisted into what she would become. Intrestingly Marvel did a female version of Mr Sinster (well its not really but sort of is her name is Claudine Renko and she was one of the potential people who could have been taken over by him) and she looks so much like Ce and is a bitch it's quite scary :)

Also RJ Merida is Scottish not Irish as a Scotsman i know :P

Y'vellie "Mort" Tav'arin is mostly based off of Oh Daesu from the original Oldboy, with a small touch of Alfred, Bruce Wayne's butler... Mostly Oh Daesu though.
This line:
"Even though I'm no better than a beast, don't I have the right to live?" - Said several times in the movie.
Is a line that pretty much defines Y'velli's story. It's a real mess, bizarre, and generally heart breaking story with a ton of twists involving both him, Hydaro, and Hydaro's "father". The reason that he doesn't show any emotion doesn't have anything to do with him not knowing how to show it, because he does show a smirk or quick smile occasionally. It has more to do with him turning himself off, because "they can't hurt you if you're not there."

I think the fact that his story is so bizarre with a bunch of hidden surprises is what makes me want to play this character more than I usually play as one of my Alts, the mystery that I leave for other characters to slowly figure out the more they hang around him is really thrilling.
[Hint: I give off clues every time he speaks, fitting considering he use to have his tongue cut out and went by the name Mute.]
The character is like one puzzle cube that needs to be unraveled and set in order to understand, but the fact that he only bothers associating with people who have earned his respect in combat makes the task of figuring him out alot more challenging.

I love characters that are broken mentally, beyond repair, insane, like Fenar and Hydaro.

Oh Daesu from Oldboy (I recommend watching this movie, it's really good)

The only character I can recall basing them off someone is Cass.  I based her off of Kid from Chrono Cross

First all, all my thumbs up for this. Chrono Cross was seriously underrated. And this is coming from someone who's more of a Trigger fan.

Alright, my own people then.

Kestal: Hoo boy. Originally Kestal - created circa 2006 - was, if anyone, most closely representative of Janine "Fox" Renard-Xanatos from Gargoyles: redheaded action girl and part-time schemer. Of course, since Kestal is no longer the LE Blackguard she started as, a lot of that has changed since then. There are still some traces of that in her personality now, admittedly, particularly her closeness with her husband and her protectiveness of her family, the Blue Thorns, as well as a drive to fix her screwed-up past. Nowadays, in her current LG Paladin state, she's not really based off anyone in particular, other than a general ideal of what I as someone who regularly tests out as Lawful Neutral would imagine as "the best I could be" if I were less apathetic and cynical. There is probably also a bit of General Beatrix from Final Fantasy IX in her, as she's one of my go-to ideas for a "redemptive paladin" example.

Caprice: I think the ultimate influence on Caprice would be Relm Arrowny of Final Fantasy VI - short, smart, snarky, and spell-savvy. Stir in a bit of Molly Carpenter from The Dresden Files with less flirting and maybe some of Ed form Cowboy Bebop.

Kendaku: Interestingly enough, Kendaku seems to be a composite of Celes Chere from FFVI, Amarant Coral from FFIX, Cendrine South from the Dead Weight series by M. Scott Gallowglas, Ryudo and Millenia from Grandia II, Pathfinder's Ameiko Kaijitsu, and my own personal dislike for Lolth.

Shezzarin: Shez is the composite of most of my fey knowledge distilled through The Dresden Files and the October Daye series. I think as a character she's closest to April O'Leary from the latter. Her bizarre speech patterns and such borrow a little from Emeralda Kasim from Xenogears.

Edge: Edge's appearance is, mostly thanks to Bella and a couple of people from my first server, based on a combination of the wrestler who shares his name and Bart Fatima from Xenogears, eyepatch included. His personality was generally intended to be a sort of "laid-back good-ol'-boy brawler"; the best example I can really think of is Sabin Figaro from FFVI, I can definitely see Edge saying with perfect seriousness "Did you think a minor thing like the end of the world was gonna do me in?"

I'd put money on you liking FFVI a lot...
