It depends on the century, craftsman, country, idea, etc. As you can see, this armor is different than plates, used on horseback, for example.

There's a scene in the old movie The Lion in Winter where a couple of (12th century) knights fight in full hauberks with leather tunics and metal greaves (so a good few dozen pounds of steel), in a winding staircase. I always liked the realism of it because they go to daggers and grapple to stab the weakspots fairly quickly given how more more effective it is for two armored opponents with space restrictions. It was rare for a movie at the time, and still is.
