General Discussion / Seeking retainers for a noble ...

HELLRIDERS IN EXILE
Seeking Retainers for an Approved Noble Character

I am looking for retainers for my approved noble character. Below I'll explain exactly what I'm looking for and, more importantly, what sort of characters would fit.

A noble character especially a foreign noble can feel somewhat empty without people around them who share their history, loyalties, and burdens. So I am looking for as many people as I can find who are interested in roleplaying fellow Hellriders, much like Verso himself.

What does being a Hellrider entail?

It means that your character spent a significant portion of their life training and serving as part of one of the most renowned cavalry forces in the Forgotten Realms.

The Hellriders have possessed an almost legendary reputation for generations. Their name does not come from any allegiance to the Hells, but from the tale of their forebears riding bodily into Hell itself—and, according to the legends, refusing to abandon those who had gone before them.

Duty, loyalty, discipline and sacrifice are therefore not merely ideals to a Hellrider. They are part of their identity.

At some point during this life, your character met Verso and became closely associated with him.

The relationship is an unusual mixture of lord and retainer, officer and soldier, and—perhaps most importantly—friendship.

Other Hellriders would still address and treat Verso with the respect owed to a lord and commander, particularly in public.

But make no mistake:

You are comrades, friends, and brothers or sisters in arms.

You were also present for—or became involved in—the events that eventually forced Verso to leave Elturel and travel east towards Cormyr.

Whatever happened, you chose to follow him.

Perhaps out of loyalty.

Perhaps because you were equally responsible.

Perhaps because you know the truth and cannot allow him to bear it alone.

Perhaps because leaving him to face exile alone was simply never an option.

The exact circumstances surrounding Verso's departure, and the secret shared between these characters, will be explained during the character creation process.

TL;DR

This concept will probably appeal to you if:

  • You enjoy playing characters from a highly militaristic culture, built around discipline, service, duty and an almost indoctrinated loyalty to Elturel.
  • You are comfortable playing someone who is almost unreasonably Lawful. The intended alignment is roughly Lawful Neutral, although the one-step alignment rule leaves plenty of room for variation.
  • You enjoy characters devoted to good-aligned gods such as Helm, Torm, Tyr, Lathander or Ilmater.
  • You like the idea of belonging to a legendary military order, complete with an excellent colour scheme, centuries of history, traditions, rituals and enough undefined lore for us to create some of our own.
  • You like the idea of having fierce loyalty towards your lord, friend and commander, Verso, as well as towards your fellow Hellriders, whom you consider brothers and sisters in arms.
  • You enjoy playing a character who understands hierarchy and discipline without becoming a mindless servant.
  • You enjoy making fun of people from Baldur's Gate, the ever-present shadow just down the road from our glorious and obviously superior city.
  • You really hate the Zhentarim.
  • You enjoy opposing tyrants, cultists and followers of evil gods such as Bane.
  • You enjoy characters who might disagree, argue, insult one another or even come to blows—but who will immediately close ranks when an outsider threatens one of their own.

The Relationship with Verso

One thing I want to make particularly clear is that I am not looking for characters who simply worship the ground Verso walks upon.

Your loyalty may be extraordinary, but you are not mindless servants.

You have fought beside this man.

You have bled beside him.

Some of you may have known him for years.

That means certain Hellriders have earned liberties with their lord that would be completely unacceptable from an ordinary retainer.

You may question him.

You may argue with him.

You may tell him when he is being an idiot.

A veteran Hellrider might quite comfortably say:

Quote"My lord, with the greatest respect, that is the stupidest order you have given me in twenty years."

...and then immediately mount their horse and carry it out anyway.

Rank matters. Respect matters. Discipline matters.

But so do years of shared hardship, battles, victories, losses and friendship.

That is the dynamic I am aiming for.

Not a collection of servants following a nobleman around, but something closer to a military family in exile.

You may quarrel among yourselves relentlessly.

But when someone outside the company threatens one of you, suddenly they have threatened all of you.

Character Hooks & Inspiration

These are only suggestions. You absolutely do not have to choose one of these roles.

The Veteran

An older and experienced Hellrider who has served for decades.

They have become Verso's thoroughly unrequested parental figure and have absolutely no intention of stopping now.

Verso may technically outrank them, but everyone knows who gets the look when he's doing something stupid.

They are respected as the elder of the company and frequently serve as its voice of experience.

---

The Company Medic

A battlefield healer, surgeon, priest or combat medic responsible for keeping everyone alive despite their best efforts to prevent that.

They may be compassionate and gentle—or frighteningly practical about battlefield medicine.

---

The Sapper / Demolitions Expert

Walls, gates, barricades and infernal fortifications are merely problems awaiting sufficient quantities of explosives.

A military engineer trained in siegecraft, breaching and destroying whatever happens to stand between the Hellriders and their objective.

After all, if Hell itself has gates, someone has to know how to open them.

---

The Horsemaster

The Hellriders are cavalry first and foremost.

This character is responsible for horses, mounts, their training and their welfare. They might be a breeder, veterinarian, stablemaster or simply someone who understands horses considerably better than they understand people.

---

The Company Mage

A battlefield mage whose talents are used for reconnaissance, communication, protection and war.

They may also be an essential participant in some of the old rituals and traditions practised by the Hellriders.

---

The Standard-Bearer

The person entrusted with carrying the company's colours.

Losing the banner would be considered an almost unimaginable disgrace.

They might also serve as the unofficial keeper of the company's traditions, battle honours and the names of those who have fallen.

---

The Scout / Outrider

A ranger, rogue or lightly equipped cavalryman who rides ahead of the company.

They find safe routes, watch enemy movements, gather intelligence and ensure the heavier riders don't enthusiastically charge into an obvious ambush.

---

The Quartermaster

Someone has to make sure the Hellriders actually have food, armour, horseshoes, weapons and money.

Probably the only person in the company capable of terrifying Verso by opening a ledger.

---

The Chaplain

A priest or deeply religious warrior responsible for the spiritual wellbeing of the company.

They perform funerary rites, bless riders before battle, counsel the troubled and remind everyone what the Hellriders are supposed to represent.

---

The Shield

Verso's closest bodyguard.

Not necessarily because Verso wants one, but because at some point someone decided that keeping the idiot noble alive was now their sacred duty.

Verso's opinion on the matter may be considered optional.

---

The Chronicler

A scholar, bard or educated soldier who records the deeds of the company, maintains its rolls and remembers those who died.

They may also be painfully aware of the difference between the legend of the Hellriders and the considerably messier truth.

---

The Penitent

Someone who followed Verso into exile not merely out of friendship, but because they believe they share responsibility for whatever happened.

Of everyone in the company, they may be the most determined that the truth never comes to light—or the one most tormented by keeping it secret.

Other concepts are absolutely welcome.

The roles above are intended as inspiration rather than positions that need to be filled.

If you have an idea for a Hellrider that fits the company, its culture and the shared history surrounding Verso, I would love to hear it.

Ride together. Fight together. Return together.

Suggestions & Ideas / More temples as respawn points
Last post by mochakimono - Aug 23, 2026, 09:11 PM
I have discovered that neither of these areas are mechanically viable as respawn / reset points:

- The Monastery / Temple to Chauntea in Huthduth
- The Temple to Tempus / Valkur / Stronmaus / Red Knight / Uthgar in Swordhaven

The error messages tell me that only tended shrines are eligible for respawn points, which these both are.

The monastery would be quite nice to have for reset as well, since I've been RPing my priestess of Chauntea as residing and volunteering there, but sadly I have to teleport there fresh with each reset. There is a kitchen, dining area, and public sleeping area, so it seems it should be eligible.

If I discover any other shrines / temples that are mechanically nonviable but seem they should be viable, I'll add them below.

Alas no, sorry! If anything, the current amount of features DD can end up with is perceived as being too much.

Can Epic DD get the choice to get the extra option that is denied at level ten? (Like, getting horns if you take the tail or vicversa) it's jut a little rp extra to show the dedication. Nothing mechanical, just flavour^^

Quote from: Moongleam on Aug 17, 2026, 11:28 PMHello,

In light of the new updates to the Favored Soul class, I have a couple questions. I'm aware my Favored Soul character requires a mandatory rebuild, but I need some more information before I know how I'd even want to rebuild them.

Firstly, since they are now fully compatible with divine PrCs, can class features (energy resistance, weapon focus/specialization, wings) be obtained based on combined PrC/Favored Soul levels, or only total Favored Soul levels? For example, would a Favored soul/Silverstar still need to reach favored soul level 17 to be eligible for wings, or would 17 combined levels between both classes be sufficient, since Silverstar also advances divine spellcasting?

Secondly, is there any leeway on the exact weapon granted by the deity weapon focus/specialization feats? Specifically, I'm wondering if a dex-based Favored Soul of Selune could be allowed to get those feats for a light mace rather than a heavy mace, so that it benefits from weapon finesse.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. Thank you, also, for overhauling this class; the compatibility with divine PrCs is much appreciated.

Other classes only advance their spellcasting--so they'll get boosts to caster level and spells known, but not additional features from FS like the energy resistance and wings. You'll still need 17 FS levels for wings, much like Eldritch Knight doesn't give the bonus feats that wizard gets. This update allows FSes to also gain higher level spells from other divine classes, where previously they only got improved duration for the spells they already knew.

The weapons are automated and pretty much set in stone, unfortunately. Personally, I think both light and heavy mace should be on the same feats, but that's something for balance to discuss.

Player Announcements / An Apology, Explanation And Mo...
Last post by Terallis - Aug 16, 2026, 02:18 PM
(I know this is a wall and a bit of a read, but please read through if you can.)

So, been away for quite some time. Most still about who know me, having been around the server prior for quite a long while. But this thread isn't really about a return announcement or anything like that. But I should say that it may ramble on at times in all that I have to say, as opposed to giving it real segmented structure and all that. So please bear with me.

The most important part about this post, however, should come before anything. When I left, things weren't left in a great state at all; a rather horrible one at that. I had lashed out at two people over a build up of many other factors that I'll get into. If those two on staff want to chime in and make themselves known, that's fine, but I'll leave names out of the overall message here. You know who you are, at least. And to that, I want to deeply apologize for things I had said. Even through build-up and all that was going on at the time, I should never have blown up as I did, nor said the things I did. Emotional state, triggers, or otherwise, there was no excuse for me speaking in that sort of way, then, now, or any other time. So truly, I apologize for all that.

To further things, I also wish to deeply apologize to anyone I've made feel uncomfortable or similar, with any of my RP. It's never been my intent in any form to make anyone feel bad, uncomfortable, afraid, etc. I wasn't aware of how my RP was affecting people until staff reached out to me, but even still, I should've still been more self-aware of the situations and how verbal I was being with specific characters of mine. I know Rune/Alaric was the worst of it, with Eirik not far behind. I can say all I want that everything I do with the characters is entirely IC, but even IC can breach the comfort levels of those around. So, once more, I really do apologize for that.

I'd also like to apologize for the slurs that were put into my farewell post. At the time, I was already gone, but was made aware by a couple others that my post had some really horrible things said, and words put in that I'd never use. That farewell message, unlike the blow-ups I had at the two mentioned, was entirely just meant to be a way to say farewell and thank everyone for all the fun times here. Anything beyond that wasn't done by me, as I'm sure everyone was made aware of the apparent breach into the forums itself. I was not the one who said those horrible things added in that post, but it was still my own post and was likely perceived that way all the same. Staff can verify the edit was a malicious party from the breach. So I do apologize for what happened there, even if it was out of my control.

As a continuation of that breach, I'd also very much like to know if there were any others sent any messages or other posts edited or similar. Aside the two direct ones I mentioned, and the erroneously edited farewell post, there was nothing else I actually did when I was leaving the server. So if anyone was sent anything or similar, I apologize for any of that, and want to say it was very much not me to have done so.

But moving on from apologies now, I did wanna say some other things. I hadn't thought I'd actually be coming back around the server when I left. Me coming back came from a lot of deep thought, and ultimately wanting to RP and play with friends and such. Despite how things seemed before, I have no intention of causing problems or anything like that. I'm not interested in making anyone uncomfortable or anything like that, as previously said, and I'm only really just looking to play again. Even the characters that were the issue at the time, I've already since decided to tone down even more of their personalities, for the sake of enjoyment.

On the note of toning down, though, I do understand, as mentioned, that I wasn't doing things well at a point before. I had actually been working on toning down Rune, especially, over more than six months after being given a warning at the time, about things. But much as was made known at the end and now with my return, I perhaps still wasn't toning him down as much as I thought. To which I very much urge people to PLEASE just send me a message or something to let me know if something I'm doing is making anyone feel uncomfortable. It can often be difficult for me to fully grasp situations like that, especially when it comes to text stuff. So please just tell me, because I have never and will never have any intent of making problems like that for people. All that I do is IC, and that's not indicative of me as a person, OOC.

Now, getting into perhaps the reasoning for that blow-up I had at the end... I've actually kinda said much of it scattered about this post. Before I get into this, please note I'm not trying to make excuses for myself. My intention here is to be as clear and unequivocal as possible. After staff warnings, I had been trying to tone down the more aggressive RP, and with heavily correcting my own behaviour, to make sure I didn't cross any lines. Unfortunately, I began to feel as though my efforts weren't being acknowledged and didn't matter to staff and my fellow players. Now as I said before, I am not trying to make excuses- in the year or so that I've been gone I've come to terms with the fact that my emotions can get out of control, and I don't blame staff for the actions taken against me. The way I blew up was wildly inappropriate and is one of my biggest regrets in my time on this server.

To say again, all of my potential "insulting, abusive, violent, etc" sorts of things were purely IC and part of that particular character. As a player, however, knowing how that RP made others feel has me genuinely horrified and I will be refraining from engaging in that type of RP from now on. Even so, if I ever make anyone uncomfortable again, I plead that you reach out to me so we can talk about it even if it means having a staff mediator to help you feel safe reaching out to me.

To all of that, I want to say again more clearly that I'm deeply sorry for my actions. I'm well aware now of what many people think of me and I'm ashamed that it's come to this point. Please just know that I am not my characters and my characters aren't me. I want everyone to have fun and make fun stories and everything through the RP. I don't want people feeling legitimately bad and uncomfortable.

So with all that rambling, once more, I'm truly sorry for all that happened before, leading up to, and at the moment I had left. Thanks for taking the time to read through this wall, everyone, and hope to see you all in-game again. Or if you wish to keep your distance, that's fine as well.

Such areas do already exist in the module, just not readily accessible to players
