Nightstar: Fragments of the Past

Below is a segment from Nightstar: Fragments of the Past—directly related to the server, and those friends I once spent a great deal of time roleplaying with. Thanks again for the fond memories!

Blueprint of a Story
The Architecture of Nightstar

Nightstar is not a conventional fantasy novel. It was constructed with deliberate care—its structure shaped with an almost architectural precision, guided by an engineer's mindset. Beneath the surface of its world, its magic, and its conflicts lies something quieter but far more profound: a layered metaphor, woven carefully into the foundation of the story. It speaks to something darker, something deeply human and, at times, painful.

But before that layer can be fully understood, it is important to return to where this story truly began.

Prior to 2014, I was climbing out of a very real and very personal darkness—a period defined by drug use, despair, and a sense of being lost. What followed was a hard-won journey toward sobriety, one that felt, in many ways, like a redemption arc of its own.

At the end of that chapter, I found myself stepping into a different kind of world: online role-playing.

Through Neverwinter Nights, on a server set in Cormyr and the Dalelands, I discovered something I hadn't expected—connection, creativity, and a shared space where stories could breathe. It was there that the earliest sparks of Nightstar first took shape.

The characters who now inhabit this novel did not come from isolation; they were inspired, shaped, and, in many ways, gifted to me by the people I met during that time.

Tori, for instance, draws from a character named Kori, brought to life by my friend Vincent—yes, the naming may not be particularly inventive, but the sincerity behind it matters far more. Salei'ra finds her roots in Caprice, portrayed by my friend Edge.

And La'aara, perhaps the most personal of them all, was inspired by a character played by Lorelai. With her blessing, I carried the name forward—altering its form slightly, but preserving its sound, its spirit, and the emotional truth at its core.

Lorelai herself—Shelly—is the person to whom this book is dedicated. She was my muse, my first reader, and a steady presence during the earliest shaping of this story.

It was within those shared moments—those hours spent building narratives together in a digital world—that the relationships at the heart of Nightstar first found their voice. What now exists within these pages is, in many ways, a continuation of that time: a reimagining, a preservation, and a tribute.

To those who once walked those paths with me—who helped shape these characters and gave them their first breath—I hope you can see your influence here.
More importantly, I hope you recognize the care with which your creativity has been honored, and that you find something meaningful in the story it helped bring to life.

Suggestions & Ideas / Re: Epic Dragon Disciple

Dragon Disciple is such a good class that we are likely to consider a nerf before we consider a buff. The epic levels are somewhat underwhelming, yes, but if we were to buff them it would likely involve dispersing some of the class' current power budget into epics rather than suddenly making one of the best classes in the game even better.

Sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear, but no other class gives the sheer amount it gives for 10 levels.

Pelordaes7, 'Czu Tir'end' has been banned from the game for being an ass to basically everyone all day, trolling, ignoring IG laws and rules, and then calling the DM staff various names.

Quoteif they're up, they're always with closed rosters and it's hard to get in them for a 'new' player.
Aside from personal plotlines which are pretty rare in themselves, every closed roster listing started life as an open sign up. Keep an eye on new quest announcements.

What you said at the end was exactly the point I was trying to make!
It feels like there's no personal agency in the levelling process past 15-16.
You get capped on combat xp after a single dungeon, maybe two, and then you just have to wait xx number of days.
I'd -love- some sort of system that rewards actual activity, without majorly impacting the server or "forcing" people to participate in it.
That's what I meant with the, for example, 100 rp xp for clearing a level appropriate dungeon.

Suggestions & Ideas / Epic Dragon Disciple

It's still me! Yes, I know my posts really focus on diverse stuff!

When I made chiara I had in mind to get her to 20 DD levels, for flavor, concept and 'power fantasy' but epic DD really gives nothing to make it worth it.

DDs are picked up by martial classes. You'll surely see barbs and fighters in there. maybe some prc like errant knight, unyielding def, anointed knight etc.

Beside the errant knight (which is ilmited to 5) all of the martials give great advantages compared to going further on DD.

Barbarian gives you better rages, damage reductions, feat, dodge.
Fighter gives you AC and feats.

Epic DD just offers less than what base class do, which is underwhelming because it's a PRC and epic levels.

It stops the phisical transformation effects which is the whole theme of the class, there's few bonus feats, and it improves, slowly, the already awful breath weapon.

Sure, it gives some AC bonus, but fighter does it too with extra feats on the menu. It's just a worse fighter.

My suggestion is to make the ac bonus better, either making it every 3 levels instead of 5. Or by giving armor skin, if not at 11 somewhere in between.

Get some stat increase or adding Great STR, CHA and CON as bonus feats and give a few more bonus feats.

Improved dragon breath that increases its damage and DC at some point

and why not, some flavor to get horns, tail and wing together in the mix.

Some other fun features could be innate SR or a fear aura, impoing the blindsense bonus to +15

Make DD fun. Every time I see at my future plan for epic levels I just can't unsee that by going full fighter i get an insane benefit compared to keeping leveling following the concept and flavor.

Inheritor does not have this kind of problem. Their breath is already far better and they also get more bonus feats.

I kinda agree on this. Expecially on EU hours most people are online in the square, get their xp and hop off. I recently hit 20 on Chiara so i'll add this feedback on top.

after you reach lvl 15 it gets pretty still. Unil 15 there's less' waiting' but you still work for something as you rp and get your story growing.

At level 13 you can start getting a few items you can equip 'soon'

but the 'search' for items is almost dreadful.

Between pruple and orange items there's what -3 months- of time total? if not more.

That means that adventuring for better gear is something absolutely not going to happen and is aboslutely not incentivised.

I managed to get my full set of eldritch gear at the start of level 19 (except one item)

Up to level 16 leveling is nice, you're hyped because you can do more and more, see new places, join higher level people. But after that? that feeling slowly dies, you do the same dungeon every day, IF you go out for a dungeon, that is.

Maybe gearing can get some tweaks, like allowing a certain amount of higher tier level equipped between the full step.

I know this is an event based server, where most of the focus is on that kind of play, but besides the halloween event that was open for everyone i couldn't join any other event since if they're up, they're always with closed rosters and it's hard to get in them for a 'new' player.

Sure, the 'stacking' of doubl rpxp limit was a blessing, i don't feel like i -have- to log in every day or miss on my progression, but still, the idling rpxp drags on a 'waiting' system with idle and dull rp because most people just sit in the square and chitchat because they -need- to do it.

There's no goals to reach, nothing to work for, you just log, get your xp and that's it.
